Weekly Class - Mending & Altering
This course will run each Saturday from 3:00 PM-5:30 PM.
This open workshop is suitable for all beginners to intermediates. We will invite you to select, in class, the type of techniques that you wish to learn from a long list of useful skills. You are encouraged to bring along a garment that may need repair or alteration as a means to practice these particular techniques. This may be an alteration job, perhaps you need to sew on some buttons, or maybe you'd like to shorten your skirt or pants. This class will empower you to fix and change your clothing with skill and finesse.
What will I learn?
Structured into the class is the anatomy of a domestic sewing machine and its functions. You'll be taught how to thread the machine, wind a bobbin, the role of thread tensions, and a number of different stitches and settings relevant to its technique. We may introduce you to the use of an overlocker if relevant too.
You will also learn to thread and use a hand sewing needle, including how to sew a button to a garment with an elegant shank to ensure a secure and enduring fastening.
Hand sewing with a needle and thread, you will also learn how to hem trousers or skirts discreetly with a herringbone stitch. Time permitting there will be a number of other hand-sewing stitches on offer to learn.
-All equipment and materials will be provided such as scissors, snips, and pins.
